When Abigail takes the
stage at The Space Saturday, she’ll be celebrating the
release of the first single, "Better With You," from her
upcoming album, but the Hamden resident will also be
celebrating her new sound.
After moving from England to the states, she first settled
in California before signing with Strictly Rhythm Records, a
label popular for dance music. Abigail released three
singles for the label, all three landing in Billboard’s
dance Top 10; two of them hit the top of the charts. But
while working on an album, the label went under.
"They wanted the album to be hybrid of acoustic meets
dance," says Abigail, who also achieved success in the
mid-to-late ’90s by turning rock songs such as "Losing My
Religion" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" into club thumpers.
"After the label (went out of business), it was freeing and
I was allowed to put more of me in the music. I took a step
back and decided to create what I want out of this.
"It still maintains a cool electronic edge, but it’s more
earthy. The electronics give it edge, though."
Abigail’s been living in Hamden for four years and says she
loves it. "I didn’t want to live in (New York)," she laughs.
She then hopes to shop the record to college radio and "take
it from there," maybe even have the same kind of success on
the pop charts as she had on the dance charts.
