Abigail Zsiga
Show Review - Coda, New York.
As promised here is a review of the night's show. First, we’d like
to offer a quick thanks to Mr. Moz Morris who alerted us to this
special showcase.
Abigail took the stage around 7:15 looking at home and really
relaxed, a presence that remained throughout. Overall we loved the
sincerity in her voice and the emotive power. Her set contained 10
songs all written or co-written by the Chanteuse herself. The songs
were performed in an acoustic setting and, as Abigail told us
herself, the direction she has wanted to go in for several years
now. At the outset, we can say -- Go gurl!! Her voice is reminiscent
of Dido, only stronger and more full. You can’t believe such a
powerful voice comes out of such a small body. Two words; Flaw-less!
The first track Abigail performed was “Wide Open.” This is an epic
piece of work that set the tone for the night. Great hook on this
track which really displayed her great vocal control.
Next up was a song we’re calling “That's Where I'll Be”. This is a
sorrowful tale of a love going bad. We decided that as good as this
was live, we can’t wait to hear it in the finished production with a
little more instrumentation.
Abigail seems to emotionally rebound in “Pity The Fool.” With lines
like “you’re alone and I’m not missing you. And that makes you the
fool”. All we have to say is Ouch! This could very well be the
you-done-me-wrong anthem of 2004. Abigail, you weren’t directing
that at anyone in particular were you? We pity him.
Next up was Abigail’s modern take on the torch song with “It’s not
me”. This song brings us back to the trauma that we all have related
to at one time or another – unrequited love…UGH! You know. You’re in
a relationship. You love him, but you realize it’s not a two way
street. Pull out the tissues honey. Abigail left no doubt in her
delivery of this one… she’s been there too.
As if unrequited love wasn’t enough, the next song was about a long
distance relationship. In "90 miles", co-written by her guitarist
Michael Patzig, Abigail gets points for even trying the long
distance thing. Scott refuses to enter into those for the obvious
difficulties. But we found ourselves rooting for Abigail that her
man would call her, miss her and remain faithful. After all "90
miles" isn’t too far, but it’s far enough to stray. Most men need
only a few feet!
Next up Abigail gave us perhaps her most personal song to date. In
“Home Again” she shared a bit of her life and loss with us. The song
is about her grandfather and his death. Hope you didn't put the
tissue away cause you'll need them again; think Beaches here.
Abigail stripped this number down to its raw core by playing the
guitar herself while the drummer softly played djembe in the
background. This number needs to stay as it is. No production, thus
showcasing Abigail’s tender words and vocals. Any production will
get in the way of the fond memories she shares with her fans.
Picking things up again, Abigail delivers another potential classic
F-you song - "In Spite Of You". No other way to put it. The girl put
the vocal chops behind this one and let us have it. If any one’s put
you down or held you back, we’d suggest sending them a CD with this
on it. Jiffy’s writing a “to be sent to” list already.
To make this review shorter and because we heard “Come To Me” twice
(sorry a joke you had to be there for) we’ll cut to the final song
of the night. Ok, we confess we’re really just covering for the fact
that we were so into the show we lost track for a bit. “Missionary”
was a great way to end the show. Soaring vocals were delivered on
this impressive number where Abigail is convincing a man that she’s
the one to be with. Well, she convinced Scott and he’s a
self-professed homo! Perhaps it was the raw sexuality she exuded,
but he wants more.
Thank you Abigail for turning your two loudest fans in the crowd
OUT! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us afterwards. Thank
you to Andrew as well, it was a pleasure! We’ll be sure to catch
this one again and anyone else who gets the chance, you won’t be
disappointed.
